Dry needle treatment is a relatively new treatment based on modern Western medicine. This treatment was developed in the 1980s, and during treatment, needles are inserted into trigger points or tender bands of muscle located within larger muscles. The points where the needles are placed are based on anatomy, such as muscles, nerves, and joints. When needles are inserted, they elicit a response to increase blood flow and oxygen, relieve muscle pain, spasms, or tension, and restore normal function. The difference between dry needling and acupuncture is that dry needling is used to treat cases of chronic and acute neuromuscular pain.
